Dota 2 MMR Guide
Valve has changed the Dota 2 ranked role matchmaking system once again. The latest update removed separate core and support ranks and merged them back into a single rank. It sounds like the good old days. But they also added something new.
Players that have access to ranked matchmaking are required to play 10 calibration games before they are designated a match making rating MMR , a number that describes your skill level. At this point, games lost or won will net the player a loss or gain of 25 MMR points, assuming the teams are evenly balanced. We will discuss several interesting features of this MMR system and its potential weaknesses as a method of determining player skill.
An interesting thing to note is the increase in the highest ranking MMR players over time. Is MMR inflation a thing? We will discuss the highest ranking MMR players in Part 2. In any ranked game, any MMR gained by one team will necessarily be lost in equal measure by the other team. It might therefore seem that an influx of MMR points into the system is not possible. However, there are a few reasons why MMR inflation is still possible.
Firstly, the lowest MMR possible is 1.

Matchmaking is the process through which the system groups players into opposing teams for public games modes. With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by matchmaking ratings MMR. Valve responded to the lengthy queues following Dota 2’s matchmaking update.
Ever since Valve introduced the Ranked Roles system that allows players to specify what position they would like to play in their upcoming match, the queue times for Dota 2 matches, especially at higher skill levels, have increased significantly. This is because certain roles, mostly hard support, are less popular than others and a match cannot start until every role has been filled. In the past, when one or more players desired the same role, this conflict was resolved during the game itself, often with unpleasant results.
This conflict is now resolved at queue time, but a price of this is that the matchmaker is often starved for players in the least-queued roles. The matchmaker must wait for players in the desired roles to enter the queue, or form sub-optimal matches with the players currently in queue to satisfy all role requirements. But now Valve has released a new system that is designed to make those matchmaking times quicker, the Fast Queue.
Entering the Fast Queue will hopefully get you into a match quicker than the normal queue, but you will not be able to select the role that you want to play and instead will have to play whatever role you are assigned.
Valve continues to struggle when it comes to Dota 2 ranked matchmaking and the publisher is rolling out another new solution. The latest Dota 2 update implemented a new way to queue for ranked games in the form of Fast Queue. The new system serves to speed up the ranked matchmaking experience, which has been mired of late by brutally long queue times. Fast Queue players are prioritized by the matchmaker, allowing them to enjoy shorter matchmaking times.

MMR starts at a value of 1 point, and theoretically has no ceiling at all—which means that MMR can grow infinitely. A player can obtain his or her MMR by participating in ranked matchmaking, which is divided into six-month seasons. Fresh accounts and those that have gone through seasonal MMR resets must participate in calibration matches, in order to have themselves placed at a certain MMR value.
Once a player completes their calibration matches, they receive a ranking medal, which is roughly based on their MMR. Image via Valve. This obviously can lead to confusion about how MMR works as a whole. That said, there is information about the intricate details made available by data miners and such, which we will cover in this general guide to the system. Naturally, the matchmaking system tries its best to group ten players of similar MMRs together, in order to get the fairest and most balanced matchup possible.
To do this, the system considers five separate MMR values, with some of these values being hidden from the player and his or her public profile. Solo MMR from unranked and ranked games comes first, which is determined by playing without any party members in your queue. This is facilitated by the solo queue mode in the game client, which disallows stacking up with friends. Party MMR from unranked and ranked games comes next.
A collection of thoughts and problems
Valve has introduced a new update for the matchmaking system in Dota 2. Since we believe that they have rolled to a lot of changes in a very less time. The MOBA developer is trying to make the system as smooth as possible since it wants it community to have an enjoyable experience. It has been addressing the most important issues since the start of the MMR system.
How did queue times get so bad for Dota 2 solo players? It boils down to a likely unintended consequence from Valve’s new matchmaking.
This update also includes several changes intended to remove undesirable behavior from the matchmaking pool. First, being marked for low-priority matches now results in a duration-based ban from the Ranked queue, in addition to the current game-count-based low priority requirement. The ban will start at a low threshold of a few hours, and increase up to four days for players who are very frequently in low priority. Next, it should go without saying that while the wide variety of playstyles that Dota players bring to a given match will always be welcome, intentionally ruining games for other players is never condoned.
This should help resolve several areas in which these bot accounts have a negative effect on the experience of the Dota community. We will update these servers as the unranked populations in these regions grow to the critical mass needed to be able to support splitting the user base into Ranked and Unranked queues. While there are some players that used these servers for Ranked, the low populations made them prime targets for various Ranked Matchmaking abuses.
For the time being, players in these regions will need to join Ranked Matchmaking queues in one of the other nearby supported servers.

Today’s update is once again centered on improving our Matchmaking system, The post-game screen will now show the average and max queue times for.
We know that queue times have increased across the board recently, and the most significant factor contributing to this has been the stricter requirements that Ranked Roles imposes on the formation of matches. Prior to the introduction of Ranked Roles, the matchmaker had a wider pool of people to draw upon because of the few restrictions.
Usually the role most in demand by the matchmaker is Hard Support, but this is not always the case, and historically this has varied based on time of day, skill bracket, region, etc. Players in the Fast Queue are given priority by the matchmaker, and will find matches much more quickly. In order to earn games for Fast Queue, you must elect to play with all roles selected. Playing with all roles selected will also automatically place you in Fast Queue for free. When playing solo with all roles selected, you will earn four more games for future use in the Fast Queue.
When grouped as a party, players can also earn Fast Queue games if the party fulfills all roles between its players.
